MCI WorldCom Launches High Speed Wireless Trials By CHUCK MOOZAKISMCI WorldCom has begun testing high-speed wireless service in three markets to determine how the carrier will deliver broadband connectivity in areas traditionally underserved by competing technologies such as broadband cable or DSL. The trials, in Jackson, Miss.; Baton Rouge, La.; and Memphis, Tenn.; kick off the carrier's fixed wireless strategy, MCI WorldCom will offer high-speed access in markets "less likely to be touched by cable broadband monopolies and the Mega-Bell local phone companies," the carrier said. MCI WorldCom said it is using multichannel multipoint distribution service (MMDS) technology to deliver broadband services. MMDS is capable of beaming data over a 35-mile radius. The carrier said it plans to roll out a commercial version of the service after FCC licensing approval has been granted. That is expected later this year. MCI WorldCom is offering trial participants Internet access at rates of up to 310 Kbps; the carrier said it expects to offer fixed wireless connectivity to customers in more than 100 cities by late 2001. The cities will be ones served by both MCI WorldCom and Sprint-the carrier MCI WorldCom expects to acquire later this year.
