Vignette Adds Web Services To Content Management

By Richard Karpinski

Vignette Corp. Tuesday added a new twist to the Web-services game, detailing the ability for users to make use of just-added XML protocols to expose content management processes as a Web service.

Vignette has added support for SOAP, Simple Object Access Protocol, and WSDL, Web Services Description Language, to its application server and content management platform, V6. The platform already supports J2EE and .Net, as well as basic XML documents.

The new Web-services support will allow developers to wrapper-up processes that can then be consumed by other systems within an organization. For instance, Vignette could be set up to deliver as a Web service detailed product information or price quotes, which could then be called on in real-time by other applications, such as a call center system or CRM platform. That level of content-oriented integration often requires manual processes today.

Vignette announced a deal today with the state government of New Mexico, which it said was based in part on its ability to delivery Web-services integration capabilities.

Vignette v6 runs on both Microsoft .Net and J2EE servers, including IBM WebSphere, BEA WebLogic, and Sun iPlanet.

Vignette's Web services and XML adapter libraries are immediately available and included as part of the V6 software license.
