Sendmail Integrates Virus Scanning

Sendmail Inc. said Tuesday it will offer the Network Associates McAfee anti-virus scanning engine as part of its Sendmail Mailstream Manager service under an OEM agreement between the two companies.

The objective is to protect enterprises against viruses that spread through e-mail.

Mailstream Manager is a service that ensures secure flow of e-mail inside and between companies. Sendmail is the primary source of commercial software based on the Sendmail Internet mail server standard.

By adding this virus scanning control at the network gateway, Sendmail said it is helping organizations deploy protection that's more efficient than client-side systems and systems that are not integrated into the core Sendmail services.

Sendmail Mailstream Manager provides security protection at the server, preventing harmful e-mails from entering the network and being delivered to users' mailboxes. Now, Sendmail will provide extra protection by scanning both the body and attachments of incoming e-mail messages.

Administrators will be able to configure a company's e-mail and virus protection systems through a single interface.

Sendmail Anti-Virus Filter with McAfee Security technology is scheduled to be available in April with a one-year update subscription to Sendmail's Mailstream Manager.
